The share of natural energy resources of Turkey in the World reserves are: coal 0.6% geothermal 0.8% and hydro 1%. However, petroleum and natural gas reserves are quite limited.
Primary energy resources, which are produced in Turkey, are hard coal, lignite, asphaltite, petroleum, natural gas, hydroelectric energy and geothermal energy. Lignite is the dominant source of energy produced in Turkey.
Electricity consumption of Turkey increased to 2231 kwh/person in 2005. Turkey is seeking private sector's involvement in large energy projects. Electricity demand of Turkey is growing rapidly with a rate of 8% in average for many years.
The Turkish energy sector is characterized by a strong public sector presence with many state enterprises holding monopoly positions. The energy sector of Turkey is supervised by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR).
