The informatics sector in Turkey is among the fastest-growing sectors depending on the economic and social developments in the country.

The informatics sector in Turkey, having created a three-billion dollar market, is heavily operating in hardware sales. Though software export of Turkish companies has not reached the desired level yet (80 million dollars), progress is expected in this field along with young, dynamic labor-force and new investments.

Computer penetration rate in households in Turkey has reached up to 12.75% with the highest penetration being between the ages of 16-24. Computer penetration has been 86% in high schools and 45% in primary schools for the last two years. Broadband Internet has been made available for 24,548 schools out of 38,500 in Turkey, by which 10 million students have access to the informatics media through 300 thousand computers in these schools.

In 2006, the Internet infrastructure reached 2.7 million subscribers (2.5 million of which are broadband subscribers) and 16 million users, while the number of personal computers is expected to rise over 5 million.

Turk Telekom, the leader in this field, has 41,661 staff and is the leading company in the sector with TLN 7.4 billion income in 2005. Turk Telekom, which is the 13th and 5th biggest telecommunication company respectively in the world and in Europe, has 13% of its subscribers as broadband subscribers.

Many techno-park areas (technology development in university campuses) have been established in Turkey where it is still an issue to benefit actively from the EU technology funds. Many informatics companies are currently operating in these areas.
