Private Bodrum Castle and Mausoleion Tour
Bodrum Castle and Mausoleion Tour
Bodrum, ancient Halicarnassos, was the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, the Mausoleion of Halicarnassos, the great monumental tomb of King Mausolos built for him by his wife, Artemisia.
Bodrum Castle was built by the Knights of St. John. These Christian knights dismantled one of the ancient Wonders of the world to provide themselves with an easy source of marble. Whatever they may have done to one of the ancient Wonders, it cannot be denied that they constructed a rather attractive castle with the stone! It has all the characteristics of a fortress of the late Middle Ages, and definitely well worth a visit.
The building is not only a castle but also a museum, called the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archeology. As Bodrum is situated on the site of some of the oldest civilizations and trade routes, recent exploration has increased our knowledge by yielding many artifacts, which can be viewed in the museum within the castle.
