Istanbul is well known for its historical places, fascinating textures, and energetic framework, but that’s not all… Meet the cats of Istanbul!
You can see a cat in every street, every corner, practically everywhere you look in Istanbul. Free-roaming stray cats have added colour to the city and have become a symbol.
Istanbulites are very pleased with their cat friends with whom they share the streets. Thousands of people are able to live in the same place with these animals. Locals are very much concerned with the problems of their neighbours’ too. The people of Istanbul often put food and water out for the cats that live on the streets. They also pay a lot of attention to the health of the animals. In almost every neighbourhood in Istanbul, a cat kennel is kept by the residents to protect the cats from the cold weather. You’ll often see people talking to the local feline, whether it be just saying hello or telling them how their day was. It seems the local Istanbulites have found a way to communicate with these adorable street animals.
Every cat living in Istanbul has a unique character. Some are unruly and combative, some docile and loving, some timid, or insidious, and some have human tendencies. The cats of Istanbul are very territorial. They know where to find food, where to get some love, and where they can sleep comfortably. They also know all about the humans they live near, which ones to stay away from and which ones they can approach and be fed.
Istanbul is not the only city where cats can live freely on the streets. In every city in Turkey, you’ll find a lot of street animal lovers. Public awareness was raised with a campaign called “1 cup of water, 1 cup of food” to encourage the feeding of street animals across the country. Many channels from social media to billboards, magazine pages to TV series, all got in on the campaign. Companies provide free food and shelter for street animals, municipalities carry out their treatments in special polyclinics that they’ve created for street animals.
A bond of love that goes back centuries between animals and people living in Turkey. That bond continues in an even stronger way today. To people living in Turkey, all animals are very special. We witness the love between these two species. People cross the street to establish a bond with these stray cats, even if it’s just to call them over. Lets not go without adding that Istanbul cats pose very well while being photographed. A photo of a cat with the Istanbul skyline behind it, may be one of the most beautiful memories on your phone when you leave this city. Of course, if you don't have a fluffy loved one of your own that is.
